Blaencwm Lodge

Location of Blaencwm Lodge

Introduction

Blaencwm Lodge is situated on a peaceful no-through road in the parish of Myddfai, and is one mile from the western boundary of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Blaencwm is closest as the crow flies - and by forestry track - to the village of Myddfai, but it bears the postal address of Llangadog, the closest village by road, 2.6 miles away, a pleasant and peaceful walk on a very quiet minor road. Llangadog, situated on the Towy, has two excellent eating pubs, a thriving church with a proud musical tradition, and even a station stop on the famously scenic Central Wales Line. There is a general store and an excellent butcher.

Llandovery, somewhat larger than Llangadog, is 4.2 miles in the opposite direction.

There are glorious walking opportunities in the surrounding National Park and Towy Valley. The Carmarthenshire and Gower coasts to the south and Cardiganshire beaches to the west are roughly equidistant, and accessed largely by quiet and scenic roads which are a pleasure in themselves.

Blaencwm is a detached single-storey property originating in the 17th century, sitting in its garden bordered by a stream. Its cosy sitting room and one bedroom are original and traditional. The airy dining and kitchen room is newly-built and attractive, and its double-glazed, oak-framed windows offer big skies and extensive scenic views, especially to the west and its sunsets. The wild garden itself has a number of viewing points too; and the pleasure of a glass of wine, watching the sun go down, from indoors or out, in perfect peace broken only by birdsong and the tumbling stream never wanes. A chimenea provides an extra glow on the terrace on off-season evenings. Being south-facing and private, the garden is also a good place for relaxed sunbathing. In fact it is possible to follow the sun for most of the day, with at least four different seating areas.

Blaencwm's sitting room has a woodburner stove, sofa bed, television, storage heater and telephone (self-pay). The bedroom has an exposed pine floor, storage heater, plenty of books and a working open fireplace. The bright bathroom has a bath, a good shower and a shaving point. A small storage heater ticks over and a wall-fixed fan heater is available for a quick boost of heat. Both are of bathroom specification.

The dining and kitchen room has a solid oak floor, fridge freezer, cooker/oven, microwave and granite work surface. There is a top-of-class washer/dryer adjacent to the kitchen.

There is a hardcore parking place.

  • Logs for the woodburner are free.
  • Reasonable electricity consumption is included.
  • Linen is provided, including bedding, towels and tea towels.
  • Smoking areas are in the garden.
  • With considerable regret, we are unable to accept pets.
  • Blaencwm Lodge is offered for one or two persons. You are welcome to bring a baby and cot. There is only one bedroom and the sofa bed in the sitting room is for occasional use. If you do choose to have children to stay, you need to be aware that the garden and environs are potentially dangerous, given that there are steep drops into often-deep pools which are unfenced.
  • The Prince of Wales has selected Myddfai for his Welsh home!

Blaencwm is also something of a wildlife paradise. This one-time only toehold of the red kite also has a variety of other rarer bird sightings, including goshawks, pied flycatchers, crossbills and others. The guestbook indicates an unofficial competition for sightings with over 30 species spotted in/from the garden alone. We have come face to face with a polecat in the roadside bank outside, and pheasants usually drift in to scoop up the birdfood discarded by picky smaller birds. More domestically, a treat for many are the daily visits of horses in the adjoining field.

Blaencwm Lodge is not one of the majority of cottages which are adjacent to owners' residences or in clusters. You will be on your own to relax and enjoy Blaencwm's peace, charm and seclusion.

I look forward to welcoming you.

Best wishes,

Jean
